In Loving Memory of Nicholas C. Kumburis

Nicholas C. Kumburis, lovingly known as Nick, was born on September 10, 1945, in Jersey City, New Jersey. Surrounded by the love of his family, Nick peacefully left this earth at home on September 11, 2026, one day after celebrating his 81st birthday.

Nick was a hardworking man who spent much of his life in the transportation industry as a driver and switcher. He was always willing to lend a hand and help others. Roofing was one of his specialties, and there wasn't much he couldn't figure out or repair.

Above all else, Nick loved his family. He had a true-life love story with his wife and best-friend Margie, they shared 55 years of memories and love. Together they built a family that brought him endless pride and joy. He is survived by his loving wife, Margie; his children, Nicholas Kumburis, Amy Peia, and Wendy Rodriguez; his daughter-in-law, Sue Martin; and his sons-in-law, Ed Peia and John Rodriguez. Wendy remained faithfully by his side as he passed peacefully, surrounded by love.

Nick was a proud and devoted grandfather to his five cherished grandchildren: Max, Olivia ("Oli"), Matthew, Abigail ("Ash"), and Emma Jane. Just one day before his passing, he celebrated his 81st birthday surrounded by family and love. Although Max was unable to be there for the birthday celebration, he visited his grandfather beforehand, bringing him a Wendy's Frosty and spending quality time together. These simple acts of love we will always treasure. Nick also known as “Grumpa” and “Grampy” adored each of his grandchildren and was immensely proud of every one of them.

Nick also shared a close and loving relationship with his sister, Vera, as well as the many sisters and brothers he gained through marriage. He treasured the time spent with his nieces and nephews, celebrating their lives, accomplishments, and milestones over the years. Family was at the center of everything Nick did, and the bonds he shared with his extended family brought him great pride and happiness.

In his younger years, Nick proudly served his country in the United States Army. He enjoyed spending time outdoors fishing, crabbing, and hunting, often sharing those adventures with his children. His son Nicky fondly remembers the many fishing trips they took together, whether in Nick's own boat or out on the open water. One family fishing trip became legendary when Amy began feeling seasick aboard a charter boat. Despite being warned not to go inside the cabin and to keep her eyes on the horizon, she ventured inside anyway and quickly "fed the fish." It became one of those treasured family stories that was retold for years and always brought a smile to everyone's face.

He loved oldies music and creating memories at concerts with his family. His quick wit and playful sense of humor kept his family smiling. When Amy once told him she was going to the Copacabana, he warned her to be careful because "someone was shot there." After a moment of worry, she realized he was simply quoting the lyrics from Barry Manilow's Copacabana, leaving them both laughing and creating a memory she would never forget.

Nick was a devoted father who took great pride in his children's lives. Whether attending sporting events, helping them practice, cheering on their accomplishments, watching school plays, or celebrating life's milestones, he was always there with love, support, and pride.

Holiday traditions held a special place in Nick's heart. At Thanksgiving, he was known for his mashed potatoes and proudly took charge of making them every year. One of his greatest joys was teaching his daughter Wendy how to prepare them, ensuring the tradition would continue for generations to come.

Christmas was equally special. Each year, Nick, Margie, their children, and grandchildren gathered to sing The 12 Days of Christmas. Everyone would draw from a hat to determine which part they would sing on their own, a tradition that always brought laughter and joy. Every Christmas, the family had a real tree, and after everyone else finished decorating, it was Nick's special job to add the tinsel, often generously, putting the finishing touch on a tradition that his family will always remember. Nick absolutely treasured these moments and the memories they created with the people he loved most.

Nick was happiest gathered around the grill, cooking barbecue the only way he believed it should be done, with charcoal. He was well known for his love of Pepsi and doing things on his own terms. He lived life his way, unapologetically and with a spirit all his own.

Those who knew Nick will remember his strength, independence, sense of humor, and the deep love he carried for his family. While his passing leaves an immeasurable void in our hearts, we find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace. We imagine him once again able to see clearly, walk freely, drive wherever the road takes him, and dance without limitation.
