James “Jim” Edward Hackney, 84, of Mitchell, Indiana, passed away peacefully on October 16, 2024, surrounded by his loving family and friends. Born on February 18, 1940, in Lawrence County, Indiana, to the late John Edward Hackney and Helen Harris Hackney, Jim was a beloved brother to Carolyn Sue Hackney Tumey. Jim proudly served his country as a dedicated member of the U.S. Air Force, including serving during the Vietnam War. After an honorable military career, he retired and spent his later years nurturing relationships and giving back to his community. He was a proud and active member of Jacob Finger Methodist Church in Mitchell, where his faith and spirit of service were evident to all who knew him. His wonderful spirit and kind, caring nature touched the lives of everyone around him. He was a husband, a stepfather, and a stepgrandfather, as well as a caregiver to many--always ready to offer a helping hand and/or a meal. Jim is survived by his devoted wife, Karen Mittnight Hackney, whom he adored. He was a loving stepfather to Victoria Cowart (Mark) and Michael Pratt (Lynn) and a cherished step-grandfather to Olivia Cowart, Michael Kaden Pratt, and Olivia Andrade. Jim will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to know him. His life of service, kindness, and dedication to others will be remembered fondly and celebrated. A celebration of life will be held at Jacob Finger Methodist Church on October 25, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Jacob Finger Methodist Church. *Following the service, Jacob Finger Methodist Church would like to host a meal for attendees.
