Edward Charles Jager, 91, of Newbury, VT., died peacefully on August 4, 2023, after a long, full life of scholarship, family, service, and adventure. He was born June 1, 1932, in Chicago, Illinois to Albert Edward and Jessie S. (Ward) Jager and is survived by his older sister Ruth Frigo, who resides in Woodridge, Illinois, and his younger sister Sharon Stigter of Mokena, Illinois. Ed received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Trinity College, Hartford Connecticut, a Master of Arts degree from Columbia University, NYC, a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in NYC, and a PhD in Sociology from the New School for Social Research in NYC. From 1954 to 1957, he served as a missionary in Liberia. He married Jane Alice (Stuntz) in 1960, who passed away on June 3, 2016, at age 86. The couple moved to Bloomfield, NJ, where Ed temporarily served as Dean of the Presbyterian Seminary and Jane taught Spanish at Bloomfield College. In 1970 they moved to Whitefield, NH., where Ed served as pastor of the local Baptist church and professor at Franconia College and Jane taught Spanish at White Mountain Regional High School. From 1975 to 1995, they lived in Amherst, MA. where Ed served as pastor of the Baptist Church and Jane taught Spanish at Amherst Regional High School. Ed also taught Psychology as an adjunct professor at Greenfield Community as well as spending a year teaching Sociology at Grove City College in Pennsylvania. Following retirement, the couple moved to Colebrook, NH, where Ed served as interim pastor at the Monadnock Congregational Church, and then to Newbury, VT, working together on interim assignments at three Vermont American Baptist and Congregational churches in South Strafford, Montpelier, and Manchester. In addition to adventures in China, New Zealand, Spain, Alaska, Mexico, and other exciting locales, Ed and Jane enjoyed summers at their beautiful New England cabin up in Colebrook, NH. where they gathered with the extended family, enjoying the gorgeous waterfalls, hiking, gardening, reading, barbecuing, and Ed’s favorite, roaring bonfires. They enjoyed winters at Lakeside Village in Leesburg, FL where they participated in community gatherings and events. They were employed as proctors and house parents for culinary apprentices at Beaver Lodge at the former Balsams Resort in NH for several years following retirement. Always up for an adventure, the two once served as staff members on a cruise ship for a three-month journey that held many colorful memories. Ed and Jane enjoyed 55 years together, complementing each other in so many ways and serving as a wonderful model of a supportive, loving couple who thrived in diverse environments, participated in life-long learning opportunities, community service, and outdoor adventures that brought them many lasting memories and enabled them to touch many lives.
